How to reuse Omniscope blocks: copy/ paste, bookmark or duplicate

Modified on Wed, 28 Aug at 11:13 AM

Omniscope projects can contain a large number of blocks, and in some situations, the user may wish to reuse some configured blocks in other projects. For example, this could be a data source block containing login credentials, a Field Organiser block with many formula fields, or a Validate Data block with an expected data schema configured for data screening.

This can be achieved in several ways: the block can be bookmarked for future use (bookmarks can be shared or private, visible only to the creator). Read more on bookmarks here.

Interestingly, the Report block containing an interactive multi-tab dashboard can also be bookmarked, which saves lots of time in cases where the same report is reused for different products or audiences.

Another way to replicate an already-configured block is to simply copy/paste it from one workflow to another project on the same server (from build 2024.3 b21995).

It will depend on the frequency of use whether it is more sensible to bookmark the block or to copy/paste it when required.

Important difference : copy/ paste allows you to copy over more than one block between projects. See below: several blocks are selected and can jointly be copied / pasted from the 3-dot menu in the workflow.

Note: Omniscope already supports duplication - you can drag the selection area to cover multiple workflow blocks, then duplicate them within the same project.

If you copy/paste a block group, the contents will appear in the new project as ungrouped blocks.

Copy/paste limitation: currently, the functionality doesn't cover the Data Table block and workflow shapes; the copied blocks cannot be pasted into projects on a different server.

Useful reading: Macros - reusable workflow logic, where the whole workflow block sequence can be referenced in multiple other projects.
